Guster Is For Lovers
"God bless Guster, band that I love..." After years of touring and underground cult status, Guster is finally starting to move into the limelight. Here is a band that turns out amazing albums like nobody's business (Lost & Gone Forever is one of the only CDs I own where every track is great) and yet inexplicably they haven't broken into the mainstream. WTF America? Get your act together.
Guster is also amazing live, which is why I got tickets for Kyle and I to go see them last week in Ann Arbor. (NOTE: I have always liked the Michigan Theater, as they have indie bands and art-house movies playing all the time. However, if they tell you a show is sold out, don't believe them! The box office told me Guster was sold out and I wouldn't be able to get tickets anywhere, yet 5 minutes later I had purchased 2 tickets off Ticketmaster--floor seats, 10th row.) This little trip also gave us a chance to catch up with Bail Money, who for all we knew could have developed a crack habit and started prostituting himself in the dorms. It had been that long. Fortunately, he was his happy-go-lucky Glee club self, and we were off to the races.
A couple things I learned about Ann Arbor:
1) Big 10 Burrito has fantastic food.
2) My gap of favoritism towards State over U of M has narrowed, be it ever so slightly.
3) If you are an out-of-town driver, and aren't familiar with the city, there is a 95% probability you will leave with bits of pedestrian in your grill. This is not a joke. The walkers and bikers have taken over the city, and they will not stop for you. Luckily for us, in the fight between Saturn and Schwinn, Saturn wins.
The concert was amazing, and overall it was a fun trip. If you haven't heard of Guster before--and I wouldn't admit that to anyone--you can listen here:

Guster! That's great. Yeah, I recently lived in Ann Arbor for a while, so I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Pedestrians there are just like suicide squirrels. I was one of the people who waited for traffic to go by, at crosswalks mind you, and the little crosswalk light to change. Even when my friends were like "c'mon duuude, there's no cars! Just cross!" but it starts there doesn't it?
I was addicted to Jimmy Johns subs there for a while too. Although I'm convinced the manager at the S. University location is a porn star.
Guster are pretty much the best band ever. I listen to them every night before I go to bed, and cry a little because I am so greatful that they exist.
Also, Big 10 is REALLY good. We have one here at State too. I'm living in Ann Arbor over the summer, so you better come visit me.
hee hee, you said wtf. kyle is rubbing off on you
Ah, Ann Arbor. I do miss that place.
Big 10 Burrito is worthy of praise... but Jimmy John's (both are chains, by the way) takes the cake for late-night cravings. For some reason, there just isn't anything like having turkey on wheat with provolone at JJ's. Subway? Please. You don't get the heavy rock and the care-free attitude. The Packard location, I swear, sponsors crack parties in the back of the store. It's rare to see an employee without a messed-up set of eyes and drippy nose.
As for the Peds, they own the place. And damnit, they should. It's WAY easier to get around AA without a car and it's more fun to walk anyway. Besides, who can be bothered with "suggested" traffic signs like red & green lights? Regardless, I will say that the people walking are almost always more attractive than the peeps in the vehicles.
The best part of Ann Arbor... (aside from the amazing selection of food, the all-night eateries, and the amount of quality music presented) is the Arb! Seriously, what a city ahead of its time. It is a huge chunk of land that has trails for hiking, open spaces for louging, rivers for listening, and yet is surprisingly close to the heart of everything. It's like Central Park, but without the manmade lake or fake castle.
Can you feel the nostalgia I'm going through? I miss being there!
